Two Clubs Wearing the Same Name

The first question in this block is not about the head. It is whether you hit your three wood off a tee or off the ground more often, because those are effectively two different fittings and the winner of one is regularly the loser of the other.

A tee-shot fairway wood can carry more loft and a deeper face without penalty, and the address position resembles your driver. A turf fairway wood needs a sole that will not dig into a tight August lie, a lower centre of gravity, and an address position closer to your long irons. We fit whichever version you play more, then record the second one on your sheet as a note rather than pretending the same spec serves both.

What Grass Reveals That a Mat Hides

A hitting mat has give and a perfectly level surface. Both of those forgive a leading edge that is too sharp and a sole that is too narrow, because the club skids rather than digging. Take that same head to a firm Front Range fairway in late summer and the forgiveness disappears.

So the turf-shot version of this block runs outdoors whenever the tee is open. If the weather has closed the grass, we will tell you at booking and usually recommend rescheduling rather than substituting bay data, because this is one of two categories where the substitution genuinely changes the answer.

Sole geometry is the variable that separates fairway woods, and sole geometry cannot be evaluated on a surface that yields.

Loft, and the Case for More of It

Golfers arrive attached to a fifteen degree three wood far more often than the data supports. Between a driver and a five wood, the three wood frequently has no distinct job in the bag, particularly for moderate speeds where it neither carries far enough off the deck nor gaps sensibly from the driver.

Thin air complicates it further: the carry advantage of a stronger loft shrinks up here while the difficulty of launching it off turf does not. Several blocks a season end with a golfer replacing a three wood with a five wood and gaining usable distance, which sounds backwards until you look at the grass carry table.

How the Block Runs

1. Address baseline, with particular attention to ball position relative to your lead heel
2. Reference block with your current fairway wood, on the surface you play it from
3. Sole and leading edge comparison across three or four heads on grass
4. Loft comparison within the winning head where the adapter allows
5. Shaft weight and profile, tested at a fixed head
6. Gap check against your driver and your longest iron or hybrid

What You Leave With

A written spec, the grass carry figures with the air conditions attached, and a clear statement of which job in your bag this club is doing. If the honest recommendation is that you do not need this club at all and the slot is better spent on another hybrid, that is what the sheet will say.
