Indoor fitting bays get criticised for the wrong reasons. The usual complaint is that the launch monitor cannot be trusted, which is mostly untrue for the metrics that matter. The real problem with a bay is not the instrument. It is what the room does to the golfer standing in it.
A golf course gives you a target three hundred yards away, elevated or fallen, framed by trees, with a real perspective that your eyes have been solving since childhood. A bay gives you a rectangle of white fabric a few feet in front of your face, with a picture projected onto it that has no depth at all. Your visual system knows the difference perfectly well, and it responds.
What the Response Looks Like
Three effects show up repeatedly in our own address photographs, and they show up in golfers who have never noticed any of them.
Aim tightens toward the projected image. Golfers aim at the picture rather than at the ball's actual start line, and because the picture is flat and near, small errors in body alignment feel enormous and get overcorrected. Body line inside a bay is typically two to three degrees more closed than the same golfer's body line outdoors.
The swing gets shorter and more controlled. Not consciously. A wall in front of you at eight feet triggers something protective, and the result is a slightly abbreviated motion with a touch less speed. It fades over a session as the golfer habituates, which means the first block of the day and the last block of the day are not directly comparable in a bay.
The eyes stop tracking. Outdoors, a golfer watches the ball, and that watching pulls the head and torso through the shot in a particular way. Indoors the ball vanishes into fabric, the tracking instinct has nothing to grab, and posture through impact changes marginally as a result.
Nobody in a bay is aiming badly. They are aiming accurately at a target that is not the one the club will actually send the ball toward.
Why This Matters More Here Than It Sounds
If the bay only changed the absolute numbers, we could shrug. Fitting is a comparison exercise, and a constant offset that applies equally to every candidate cancels out.
It is not constant. The bay effect is largest at the start of a session and fades, it varies with the club in hand, and it interacts with the drift we already know happens across ninety minutes. That makes it a moving offset rather than a fixed one, and moving offsets do not cancel.
It also affects start-line data specifically, which is exactly what a golfer walks in wanting to fix. An extra two degrees of closed body alignment produces a start line the golfer will describe as a hook tendency, and if we accepted that as evidence we would be fitting a face angle to solve a room.
What We Do to the Room
Four things, none of them expensive, all of them worth the ten minutes they cost.
Alignment sticks on the mat, always. A physical line on the ground overrides the visual pull of the screen more effectively than any amount of concentration. This is the single largest correction available and it costs nothing.
The projected target sits at a realistic distance. Our bay defaults to a hole simulation with genuine depth cues rather than to a driving range image with a flat grid. It is not a complete fix, but a scene with perspective in it produces measurably straighter body alignment than one without.
A physical aim reference behind the ball. A small marker two feet down the intended line, placed by the fitter, gives the eyes something real to work with. Tour players use an intermediate target for the same reason on real golf holes.
Outdoor confirmation for anything start-line related. Face angle, lie angle and shaft-driven start-line questions get confirmed on the grass tee whenever conditions allow. The bay ranks; the tee line confirms.
What the Bay Is Genuinely Better At
This is not an argument against indoor fitting, and we would be foolish to make one with a covered bay on the property. The bay wins outright for a whole category of work.
It removes wind, which is the largest contaminant in any outdoor comparison, and on the Front Range that is not a minor benefit. It gives an identical lie for every strike, so turf variation stops confounding the shaft you are trying to evaluate. It delivers spin measurement from a camera unit at a quality outdoor radar frequently cannot match on a mid-iron. And it works in February, which matters here for four months of the year.
The rule we ended up with is simple enough to say in one line: comparisons happen in the bay, and confirmations happen outdoors. Anything about how a club is aimed, or how it interacts with turf, is a confirmation.
What This Means for Your Own Bay Practice
If you practise indoors through the winter, put a stick on the floor every single time. Without one you are spending four months quietly training a closed body alignment, and every March there is a queue of golfers at this studio who did precisely that and cannot work out why the ball started left all spring.
The screen is a wonderful place to work on strike quality and a poor place to work on aim. Knowing which one you are practising is most of the battle.
