Why the Setup Comes First Here Above All

Driver launch conditions are more sensitive to address variables than any other club in the bag. Tee height alone can shift where on the face you make contact by half an inch, and half an inch of vertical impact location on a modern driver face is worth several hundred revolutions per minute of spin and a meaningful chunk of ball speed.

Ball position does something similar to attack angle. Move the ball two inches back in your stance and a golfer who was hitting up on it is now hitting down on it, which turns a well-fitted low-spin head into a machine for producing knuckling drives that fall out of the sky.

So we do not begin by handing you heads. We begin by finding the tee height and ball position you can reproduce, marking them, and building your reference block from there.

What Gets Tested, in Order

  1. Tee height and ball position, established and marked
  2. Reference block with your current driver, ten to twelve strikes
  3. Loft, using adapter settings on a single head so nothing else changes
  4. Face angle and any moveable weight position
  5. Shaft weight, then shaft bend profile, then length
  6. Finalists repeated outdoors on grass with the wind logged

Length is deliberately last. A half-inch change moves your address position, which invalidates everything measured before it, so we only reach for it once the rest is settled and we are prepared to re-baseline.

The Altitude Argument

At 6,035 feet the air is thin enough that the usual driver spin advice needs adjusting. Less air means less drag, which everyone likes, and also less lift for a given spin rate, which almost nobody accounts for. A ball spinning at a figure that would hold a nice arc in Dallas can run out of support up here and drop short of where its speed suggests.

The practical consequence is that we frequently land on slightly more loft and slightly less aggressive low-spin heads than a golfer expects, particularly for moderate swing speeds. We do not assert that from a chart. We test it outdoors, log the air, and show you both sets of numbers.

Nobody should take a driver spin target from an internet article written at sea level and apply it on the Front Range without checking.

Bay Data and Grass Data

Head-to-head comparisons between similar shafts happen in the bay, because wind on our tee line swings hard enough on an afternoon to swamp the difference we are trying to see. Final selection happens outdoors, because a driver that behaves beautifully on a screen and then balloons in real air is a decision you would rather discover here.

Both sets of rows are on your sheet, labelled by surface, with the atmospheric readings attached to the outdoor ones.

What You Leave With

A written spec covering head model, loft setting, face angle, weight position, shaft model, flex, raw length, playing length, grip and swingweight. Your marked tee height and ball position. The full shot tables with discards. And an honest answer about whether the driver you walked in with is worth replacing.

Roughly one driver block in five ends with a shaft change to the existing head, which costs a fraction of a new driver and is frequently where the entire gain was hiding.

Bring the Driver You Are Frustrated With

It becomes the reference block. Without it we can rank candidates but we cannot tell you whether any of them beats what you already own.
